DESCRIPTION:The ELCA Faith Formation Team and The Fuller Youth Institute invite you to the 2020 ELCA Growing Young Train the Trainer Virtual Gathering. \nAugust 10-11\, 2020 \n11:00 am-5:30 pm Central Time \nRegistration is now open and closes on August 1\, 2020. You will receive an immediate confirmation if you submit the form correctly. \nLearn More: \nWhat We Know \nWe share a love and calling for the church and young people \nWe desire deeper connections and networking with other leaders in synods and other leaders in our church and a hope for collaboration \nWe know that young adults who were active in their church in high school are dropping out of church. We know our congregations are asking\, where are the young people? \nWe know that past research from the Exemplary Youth Ministry Study and similar studies shows that some congregations are not shrinking\, they are retaining and involving their young people (ages 15-29) which brings overall vitality to the congregations. \nWe hope this Gathering will train leaders to work within the Synodical structures and our congregations to increase the number of youth and young adults involved in the life and leadership of the church \nWe pray that because of this leadership training we will create pathways for increased leadership roles for younger people in our church \nIn September 2019\, over 40 leaders who serve as SYMBOL leaders\, other synod leaders and churchwide staff were trained in NJ. Since then\, some of the SYMBOL leaders created a synodical plan\, trained other leaders\, worked with congregations\, and are seeing substantial change and growth. \nIn January\, 2020 Over 80 youth directors attended either a Growing Young Intensive Course or a workshop at the ELCA Network for children\, youth\, and family Extravaganza in Anaheim\, CA. \nIn the spring of 2020\, over 30 people participated in a 4 week online Growing Young book study. \nWho is Invited? \nWe are inviting synodical leadership to this training\, whether it be SYMBOL\, DEM’s and others who are willing to be trained to implement the strategies in the congregations and ministries they serve.  We are inviting the Domestic Mission Staff and other churchwide staff who are interested in receiving this training for their context or ministry. Feel free to invite others to join with especially those who will benefit from the training and will help you implement a synodical or ministry strategy. \nWe believe this synergy of leaders; congregationally\, synodically and churchwide\, will create a stimulating and innovative learning environment for training\, discussion\, and brainstorming. \nCost \nThanks to a grant from the ELCA Always Being Made New Campaign\, we can offer this leadership training at no cost for all who attend.  Mark the box on the registration form if you do not have the book and we will send one to you. This year the ride will be touring the Capital Conference. Previous rides have raised over $12\,000 for ELCA World Hunger! \nAll are welcome! DESCRIPTION:Due to the current COVID-19 Pandemic\, the Mission Trip to St. Croix has been postponed to date TBD. \n  \nLutheran Disaster Response (LDR)\, a program of Lutheran Social Services of the Virgin Islands is seeking Lutheran construction teams of 10 to 20 members to assist with rebuilding hurricane damaged homes on the island of St. Croix\, U.S. Virgin Islands.  This will greatly assist with our queue of almost 80 homes to repair \nWe will be mostly repairing and replacing roofs.  We build to a standard of “safe and dry and sanitary and functional”.  We have replaced doors and windows\, built wheelchair ramps\, done mold remediation\, tarped roofs and made other repairs. \nWe are looking for volunteers to provide construction labor.  It is best if teams have a mix of a few people with good construction skills; several people who are comfortable with using tools and being on roofs\, and volunteers without much construction experience to be helping hands. \nLearn More.

DESCRIPTION:Perspectives on the Border is a two-part webinar series on immigration. This is a partnership project with Rev. Dr. Jay Alanis\, the Lutheran Seminary Program in the Southwest (LSPS)\, and the following ELCA synods: Gulf Coast\, Northern Texas-Northern Louisiana\, Sierra Pacific\, and Southwestern Texas. \nRegistration costs $50 and includes both sessions. \nSession 1: Theological Perspectives on Immigration from the U.S. Mexico Borderlands (May 13\, 4pm ET) \nThe recent refugee and migrant crisis along the U.S. – Mexico border provides a window into the complex social\, political\, and cultural worldview of two neighbor nations\, a location and human condition that calls for a theological response to how we treat ‘the other.’ The current pandemic has exacerbated the human response to migration. Dr. Barbara Rossing.  She will be speaking on: For the Healing of the World: Apocalypse\, Ecology and the Bible \nDr. Rossing is professor of New Testament at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago\, where she has taught since 1994. She loves to teach and preach about the Bible\, including the Bible’s role in public life. \nAn avid environmentalist\, Rossing is involved with environmental initiatives at the seminary. DESCRIPTION:Due to the current  limitations on in-person gatherings\, this retreat has been cancelled. We are looking to reschedule at a later date. \n\n\n\n\n\nTake a day this Lent to step back from the demanding vocation that is preaching to reflect on the art and the craft of proclaiming the gospel. Dr. Craig A. Satterlee will make presentations and invite conversation on homiletic method\, the Holy Spirit and preaching\, pondering scripture\, crafting the sermon\, delivery\, and a theology of preaching. \nThe retreat includes the celebration of the Eucharist with a sermon for the coming Sunday and opportunity for fellowship. The retreat is open to all who preach: pastors\, deacons\, seminarians\, and lay preachers; however\, this retreat does not authorize or qualify anyone to preach. You will not be expected to preach as part of this retreat. \nThanks to a generous gift to the Bishop’s Teaching Fund from Saint Peter Lutheran Church in Battle Creek\, we are able to offer this opportunity to 15 participants for $40 each\, which includes room and meals. If registration exceeds 15\, we will seek additional funding to maintain the same rate. \nThe Rev. Dr. Craig A. DESCRIPTION:Assisting Minister Training II & The Writings\nMarch 13-14\, 2020\nLocation TBA \nAssisting Minister Training II with Bishop Satterlee: Luther believed and Lutherans confess that all the baptized exercise an active\, even “priestly” role in worship. So recent Lutheran worship books provide an assisting minister role with responsibilities assigned to a member of the congregation on behalf of the entire assembly. This course provides the theology behind this role and gives participants an opportunity to learn the appropriate skills\, including setting and clearing the table\, writing the intercessory prayers\, and other responsibilities of the assisting minister in worship. \nProphets Before the Exile with Barbara Kaiser: Barbara Kaiser\, Professor Emerita of Religion\, recently retired after thirty-nine years of teaching at Wittenberg University\, Springfield\, Ohio. She frequently leads adult education classes at Lutheran\, Presbyterian\, and Episcopal Churches in Southern Ohio and occasionally serves as an adjunct professor at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus. She received a BA in English and Religion from St. Olaf College and an MA and PhD in Old Testament/Hebrew Bible from The University of Chicago.
