DESCRIPTION:The Rev. Jim Antal\, a denominational leader\, climate activist\, author\, and public theologian\, will speak as part of the Holle Speaker Series on April 23\, 2022. \nRev. Dr. Jim Antal serves as Special Advisor on Climate Justice to the General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ. Antal’s book\, Climate Church\, Climate World\, was featured in the Chicago Tribune on Earth Day 2018\, and in Christian Century Magazine on Earth Day 2019. Antal received the 2019 Steward of Creation award from the National Religious Coalition for Creation Care\, joining the Rev. Dr. Gerald Durley and Prof. Katharine Hayhoe\, and previous awardees HAH Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew\, Bill McKibben\, the Sioux Nation\, James Hansen and Wendell Berry. \nFrom 2006-2018\, Antal led the 350 UCC churches in Massachusetts as their Conference Minister and President. Antal is a graduate of Princeton University\, Andover Newton Theological School\, and Yale Divinity School\, where he was Henri Nouwen‘s teaching assistant. We saw in the first five Bible stories that we humans tend to spoil our relationships and to spoil the world God created\, yet God does not give up on us. To break into this mess\, God begins to work through individual people to rebuild a world in harmony with God. \nThe stories of Genesis 12-50 begin with Abraham and his family. How do we live as faithful people of God? The story of Abraham points the way. \nSuppose you are 75 years old and are told to move your family and belongings hundreds of miles to a country you have never visited. This is what happens to Abram\, later to be renamed Abraham. God says move “to the land that I will show you\,” and he does (12:1-5). \nThis is the first remarkable thing about Abram. He simply does what God says\, trusting that God must have a plan in mind. This is one description of faith: to do what God asks us to do. Sometimes the word call is used: Abraham is “called” by God to leave everything\, pick up his family and move\, literally to God-knows-where. SUMMARY:Introduction to Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:The North/West Lower Michigan Synod and Justice Leaders Collaborative are partnering to provide an Introduction to Social Justice course to deepen our understanding and commitment to social justice in regard to race\, class\, gender\, sexual orientation\, religion\, and ability. \nThe course will be held via Zoom on Tuesday evenings from 6:00-8:00pm\, beginning March 1 and running through April 5\, 2022. The course will be open to anyone in the Synod who wishes to participate\, but is limited to 30 people. \nIf you are interested in participating in the Introduction to Social Justice Course\, please complete the registration form by February 21\, 2022. Register Now. \n  \nAs you consider participating in the upcoming course\, check out the following endorsements of the course from those who participated: \nI found the class to be very valuable in recognizing my own bias and the pervasiveness of all the “isms”. The experience in the group gave me a framework of how to initiate these conversations with parishioners and others. \nI appreciated the broad topics that were covered during this training – including understanding and key issues related to social identities\, racism\, classism\, sexism\, and privilege. I learned new information relative to topics I thought I understood at a high level that helped me with further discernment. \nThe Introduction to Social Justice course reminded me that being anti-racist is an ongoing process. There is no fixed finish line where I will completely “get it.” There will always be more that I can learn\, from the history of racism in this country\, to tactics to being anti-racist\, to the new ways racism presents itself in this country. \nJLC consistently challenged us with the thought of “how do we show up as Christians” in racial justice matters. \nThe material is informative and the breadth of issues extensive. Spending time in the sessions and with the material was a reminder for me that “social justice” is the work of self evaluation\, a willingness learn\, and to act\, no matter how long or deep I have already traveled the path. \nHaving participated in Anti-racism training with other organizations\, it was especially meaningful for me to gather with other church leaders for this purpose. We cannot be “God’s work. Our hands.” without committing to social change. Recognizing systemic racism and confessing our part in it are instrumental in being church.

In response\, a new hybrid version of the Ignite the Church Conference will gather next February in Orlando and online to reflect on the theme: Seismic Shifts: Where Do We Go From Here? The theme is grounded in the witness of Psalm 46: 1-2 “God is our refuge and strength\, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear\, though the earth should change and the mountains shake.” Four large group sessions will focus on the following shifts: Public Church (Robin Steinke and Winston Persaud)\, Hybrid Church  (Joe and Jess Liles)\, Adaptive Church (Tod Bolsinger)\, Thriving Church  (Stephanie Spellers). You may\, however\, still find the Bible a difficult book to understand. You are not alone\, because even more people who have studied the Bible for years find that there is still much to learn. \nOne of the joys of bible study\, however\, is that it does not take years of study before reading the Bible can be rewarding. Getting to know the Bible is like watching a rosebud unfold: the experience is enriching from the very start\, and it becomes even better with time. \n​The first eleven chapters of the Old Testament book of Genesis include five of our most famous Bible stories: Creation\, Adam and Eve\, Cain and Abel\, Noah and the Flood\, and the Tower of Babel. It is important to remember that these stories were not written as scientific explanations or history in the modern sense. They were written primality as expressions of faith. To argue about their history or scientific accuracy may cause us to miss the point of the stories\, the meaning that they are intended to convey. SUMMARY:The Magnificat: Turning the World Upside Down Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:Five-hundred years ago\, Martin Luther published his Commentary on the “Magnificat” or Mary’s Song from Luke 1:46-55. This text was sung or read at every evening prayer for well over a thousand years. It also is a primary reading for worship in the season of Advent. The ELCA Wittenberg Center invites you to a three-part webinar entitled “The Magnificat: Turning the World Upside Down.” \nThis webinar series is a collaborative effort across the Service and Justice unit of the ELCA led by the Europe Desk through the ELCA Wittenberg Center.  Each of the featured speakers will bring a unique perspective to both the biblical text and Luther’s commentary. \nWednesday Dec 15: “My Soul Magnifies the Lord: The Gift of Mary’s Voice” \nRev. Dr. Wanda Deifelt (Luther College) & the Rev. Heidi Neumark (Trinity Lutheran\, Manhattan) will explore the biblical text from Luke\, its interpretation and use over the centuries. \nThursday Dec 16: “Brought Down the Mighty from Their Thrones: The Strength of Mary’s Voice” \nThe Rev. Dr. Mary Lowe (Augsburg University) & the Rev. Angela Trejos Hagger (Lutheran Augsburg Seminary in Mexico) will explore Luther’s Commentary on the Magnificat and the response with the church to Mary’s song. \nFriday Dec 17: “From Generation to Generation: The Future of Mary’s Voice” \nThe Rev. Dr. Guy Erwin (United Lutheran Seminary) & the Rev. Dr. Mercedes Garcia Bachman (Institute for Contextual Pastoral Studies of the Evangelical United Lutheran Church in Argentina and Uruguay (IELU)) will explore the implication of the texts for the future of humanity and all creation. \n  \nAll sessions will be held from 1:00-2:00pm ET. Please register by December 10th. DESCRIPTION:Many bishops and rostered ministers have reported an increase in anger in our faith communities. Certainly\, the COVID-19 issues over the past two years have made ministry more complicated: New ministry plans delayed\, organizing virtual worship and meetings\, complications with pastoral care\, financial support declining.  These problems create anxiety and anger. The anger in our churches is also a part of the anger and unrest present in our country. \n\n\n\n\nBarbara Keller\, a consultant for misconduct prevention at the ELCA has developed a 1 hour zoom seminar for rostered ministers. SUMMARY:ELMM: Revelation
DESCRIPTION:We recently took our initial plunge into apocalyptic literature and discovered that the stimulating world of apocalyptic symbols\, colors\, and numbers can be confusing. Revelation is the only entire book in the New Testament devoted to apocalyptic thought. It is an exciting and challenging book. Revelation has frequently been misused. It has been divorced from its historical setting and understood as a book of secret codes that program how God will act at the end of time. Revelation does tell us how the story will end: It will end with defeat of all evil with God united with God’s people. The exact timetable\, however\, is not outlined in Revelation (or anywhere else in the Bible). In fact\, the author tells us not to read his book as though it were a schedule. Jesus\, despite all attempts to predict the end\, will come like a thief (16:15). What is painted in the stark colors of Revelation is a series of impressionistic paintings that witness to God’s activity in the past\, present\, and future. \nThis learning event is part of Equipping Leaders for Mission and Ministry and will be led by Professor Kelly Murphy.
