DESCRIPTION:The World Hunger Bike Tour is back for 2020! \nAfter a one year hiatus\, the “World Hunger Bike Tour” returns this year for another ride to visit Synod churches to raise awareness for ELCA World Hunger and the great work they are doing! This year the ride will be touring the Capital Conference. Previous rides have raised over $12\,000 for ELCA World Hunger! \nAll are welcome! If you are bike rider and want to help us raise awareness\, as well as dollars\, for World Hunger\, this is your chance to ride one\, two\, three\, or all four the days of the ride! SUMMARY:POSTPONED: St. Croix Mission Trip
DESCRIPTION:Due to the current COVID-19 Pandemic\, the Mission Trip to St. Croix has been postponed to date TBD. \n  \nLutheran Disaster Response (LDR)\, a program of Lutheran Social Services of the Virgin Islands is seeking Lutheran construction teams of 10 to 20 members to assist with rebuilding hurricane damaged homes on the island of St. Croix\, U.S. Virgin Islands.  This will greatly assist with our queue of almost 80 homes to repair \nWe will be mostly repairing and replacing roofs.  We build to a standard of “safe and dry and sanitary and functional”.  We have replaced doors and windows\, built wheelchair ramps\, done mold remediation\, tarped roofs and made other repairs. \nWe are looking for volunteers to provide construction labor.  It is best if teams have a mix of a few people with good construction skills; several people who are comfortable with using tools and being on roofs\, and volunteers without much construction experience to be helping hands. \nLearn More.

DESCRIPTION:Perspectives on the Border is a two-part webinar series on immigration. This is a partnership project with Rev. Dr. Jay Alanis\, the Lutheran Seminary Program in the Southwest (LSPS)\, and the following ELCA synods: Gulf Coast\, Northern Texas-Northern Louisiana\, Sierra Pacific\, and Southwestern Texas. \nRegistration costs $50 and includes both sessions. \nSession 1: Theological Perspectives on Immigration from the U.S. Mexico Borderlands (May 13\, 4pm ET) \nThe recent refugee and migrant crisis along the U.S. – Mexico border provides a window into the complex social\, political\, and cultural worldview of two neighbor nations\, a location and human condition that calls for a theological response to how we treat ‘the other.’ The current pandemic has exacerbated the human response to migration. The webinar will offer theological perspectives on immigration as a border-crossing response of faith. \nSession 2: Living in Third Spaces: Where the church meets asylum seekers (May 14\, 4pm ET) \nThis webinar will explore liminal space as a third space of faithful living and offer theological perspectives on liminality as sacramental\, eucharistic space where the church encounters the migrant other. \nRegister here. \nThe sessions will run about an hour in length. \nFor additional context\, we recommend you read this lecture by Rev. Rossing \nYou are invited to attend this year’s presentation of the Holle Speaker Series on Saturday\, April 18.  This year’s guest presenter will be the Rev. Dr. Barbara Rossing.  She will be speaking on: For the Healing of the World: Apocalypse\, Ecology and the Bible \nDr. Rossing is professor of New Testament at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago\, where she has taught since 1994. She loves to teach and preach about the Bible\, including the Bible’s role in public life. \nAn avid environmentalist\, Rossing is involved with environmental initiatives at the seminary. SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Lenten Retreat: Reflections on Preaching
DESCRIPTION:Due to the current  limitations on in-person gatherings\, this retreat has been cancelled. We are looking to reschedule at a later date. \n\n\n\n\n\nTake a day this Lent to step back from the demanding vocation that is preaching to reflect on the art and the craft of proclaiming the gospel. Dr. Craig A. Satterlee will make presentations and invite conversation on homiletic method\, the Holy Spirit and preaching\, pondering scripture\, crafting the sermon\, delivery\, and a theology of preaching. \nThe retreat includes the celebration of the Eucharist with a sermon for the coming Sunday and opportunity for fellowship. The retreat is open to all who preach: pastors\, deacons\, seminarians\, and lay preachers; however\, this retreat does not authorize or qualify anyone to preach. You will not be expected to preach as part of this retreat. \nThanks to a generous gift to the Bishop’s Teaching Fund from Saint Peter Lutheran Church in Battle Creek\, we are able to offer this opportunity to 15 participants for $40 each\, which includes room and meals. If registration exceeds 15\, we will seek additional funding to maintain the same rate. \nThe Rev. Dr. Craig A. She frequently leads adult education classes at Lutheran\, Presbyterian\, and Episcopal Churches in Southern Ohio and occasionally serves as an adjunct professor at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus. She received a BA in English and Religion from St. Olaf College and an MA and PhD in Old Testament/Hebrew Bible from The University of Chicago.
