DESCRIPTION:Ignite the Church Conference\nSeismic Shifts: Where do we go from here? \nFebruary 8-10\, 2022 \nSince February 2020\, the Church has been enduring unprecedented seismic shifts. In response\, a new hybrid version of the Ignite the Church Conference will gather next February in Orlando and online to reflect on the theme: Seismic Shifts: Where Do We Go From Here? The theme is grounded in the witness of Psalm 46: 1-2 “God is our refuge and strength\, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear\, though the earth should change and the mountains shake.” Four large group sessions will focus on the following shifts: Public Church (Robin Steinke and Winston Persaud)\, Hybrid Church  (Joe and Jess Liles)\, Adaptive Church (Tod Bolsinger)\, Thriving Church  (Stephanie Spellers). You are not alone\, because even more people who have studied the Bible for years find that there is still much to learn. \nOne of the joys of bible study\, however\, is that it does not take years of study before reading the Bible can be rewarding. Getting to know the Bible is like watching a rosebud unfold: the experience is enriching from the very start\, and it becomes even better with time. \n​The first eleven chapters of the Old Testament book of Genesis include five of our most famous Bible stories: Creation\, Adam and Eve\, Cain and Abel\, Noah and the Flood\, and the Tower of Babel. It is important to remember that these stories were not written as scientific explanations or history in the modern sense. They were written primality as expressions of faith. To argue about their history or scientific accuracy may cause us to miss the point of the stories\, the meaning that they are intended to convey. This text was sung or read at every evening prayer for well over a thousand years. It also is a primary reading for worship in the season of Advent. SUMMARY:ELMM: Revelation
DESCRIPTION:We recently took our initial plunge into apocalyptic literature and discovered that the stimulating world of apocalyptic symbols\, colors\, and numbers can be confusing. Revelation is the only entire book in the New Testament devoted to apocalyptic thought. It is an exciting and challenging book. Revelation has frequently been misused. It has been divorced from its historical setting and understood as a book of secret codes that program how God will act at the end of time. Revelation does tell us how the story will end: It will end with defeat of all evil with God united with God’s people. The exact timetable\, however\, is not outlined in Revelation (or anywhere else in the Bible). In fact\, the author tells us not to read his book as though it were a schedule. Jesus\, despite all attempts to predict the end\, will come like a thief (16:15). What is painted in the stark colors of Revelation is a series of impressionistic paintings that witness to God’s activity in the past\, present\, and future. \nThis learning event is part of Equipping Leaders for Mission and Ministry and will be led by Professor Kelly Murphy. SUMMARY:Hein-Fry Book of Faith Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Some people may hope for a return to normal after the world-changing events of the last 18 months\, but sociologists tell us our future will revolve around living into a “new normal.” Presented by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)\, the 2021 Hein-Fry Book of Faith Challenge will probe this new normal. Under the theme “Imagining Scriptural Encounters in the New Normal\,” four online presentations by ELCA seminary students will help participants deepen their encounters with Scripture and strengthen their relationships with God in a time of extreme and continuous change. \nThe annual Hein-Fry Book of Faith Challenge is an endowed theological lecture series that seeks to enliven the biblical engagement of the whole church by encouraging the development of faithful\, innovative and effective ways to teach and learn Scripture. The event is sponsored by the seven ELCA seminaries\, the Hein-Fry planning team and the ELCA Book of Faith Initiative. \nEvery year\, one student from each seminary is invited to develop and present a class or series for people both familiar and unfamiliar with biblical texts. The students are then invited to report their findings. \nDiane Jacobson will host four online premieres\, each featuring a student presentation. DESCRIPTION:We are in a time of chaos: Political divisions\, social unrest\, and tensions between and within our denominations. We seek together to be well-grounded in our faith and our several callings so that we might hold a calm presence within ourselves and bring it to others. Led by Sister Nancy Brousseau\, OP\, this ecumenical retreat offers a time of reflection\, sharing and conversation. \nThis retreat will be held October 5-7\, 2021 at the Augustine Center of the Sacramentine Monastery in Conway\, MI. \nThe Planning Committee has been monitoring current health and safety concerns.
