DESCRIPTION:Five-hundred years ago\, Martin Luther published his Commentary on the “Magnificat” or Mary’s Song from Luke 1:46-55. This text was sung or read at every evening prayer for well over a thousand years. It also is a primary reading for worship in the season of Advent. The ELCA Wittenberg Center invites you to a three-part webinar entitled “The Magnificat: Turning the World Upside Down.” \nThis webinar series is a collaborative effort across the Service and Justice unit of the ELCA led by the Europe Desk through the ELCA Wittenberg Center.  Each of the featured speakers will bring a unique perspective to both the biblical text and Luther’s commentary. \nWednesday Dec 15: “My Soul Magnifies the Lord: The Gift of Mary’s Voice” \nRev. DESCRIPTION:Many bishops and rostered ministers have reported an increase in anger in our faith communities. Certainly\, the COVID-19 issues over the past two years have made ministry more complicated: New ministry plans delayed\, organizing virtual worship and meetings\, complications with pastoral care\, financial support declining.  These problems create anxiety and anger. The anger in our churches is also a part of the anger and unrest present in our country. \n\n\n\n\nBarbara Keller\, a consultant for misconduct prevention at the ELCA has developed a 1 hour zoom seminar for rostered ministers. SUMMARY:ELMM: Revelation
DESCRIPTION:We recently took our initial plunge into apocalyptic literature and discovered that the stimulating world of apocalyptic symbols\, colors\, and numbers can be confusing. Revelation is the only entire book in the New Testament devoted to apocalyptic thought. It is an exciting and challenging book. Revelation has frequently been misused. It has been divorced from its historical setting and understood as a book of secret codes that program how God will act at the end of time. Revelation does tell us how the story will end: It will end with defeat of all evil with God united with God’s people. The exact timetable\, however\, is not outlined in Revelation (or anywhere else in the Bible). In fact\, the author tells us not to read his book as though it were a schedule. Jesus\, despite all attempts to predict the end\, will come like a thief (16:15). What is painted in the stark colors of Revelation is a series of impressionistic paintings that witness to God’s activity in the past\, present\, and future. \nThis learning event is part of Equipping Leaders for Mission and Ministry and will be led by Professor Kelly Murphy. DESCRIPTION:Some people may hope for a return to normal after the world-changing events of the last 18 months\, but sociologists tell us our future will revolve around living into a “new normal.” Presented by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)\, the 2021 Hein-Fry Book of Faith Challenge will probe this new normal. Under the theme “Imagining Scriptural Encounters in the New Normal\,” four online presentations by ELCA seminary students will help participants deepen their encounters with Scripture and strengthen their relationships with God in a time of extreme and continuous change. \nThe annual Hein-Fry Book of Faith Challenge is an endowed theological lecture series that seeks to enliven the biblical engagement of the whole church by encouraging the development of faithful\, innovative and effective ways to teach and learn Scripture. DESCRIPTION:“For God so loved the κόσμον (cosmos) that he gave his only son…” (John 3:16). And the Word\, through whom all things came into being and without whom not one thing came into being\, became flesh and lived among us (John 1:3\, 14). God’s love and abundant life\, revealed in Jesus Christ\, transcends humankind and extends to all God’s good creation. \nBy invitation of our Synod’s Environmental Stewardship Task Force and in response to resolutions adopted at our 2021 Synod Assembly\, Bishop Satterlee will present “Preaching and Climate Change”\, a workshop focused on strategies for including the cosmos in preaching. This workshop will not include a general lecture on climate change. \nAt the urging of our Synod’s Environmental Stewardship Task Force\, this workshop is scheduled to prepare for the lectionary “Season of Creation” (September 1-October 4)\, an initiative of the Lutheran World Federation. As our climate continues to change\, more frequent and more severe droughts\, flooding\, and changing growing seasons all remind us of this relationship and the threat that a changing climate poses for communities around the world. This threat is expected to drive nearly 100 million more people into poverty this decade alone. \nThe North/West Lower Michigan Synod’s Hunger Team and Environmental Stewardship Task Force will be joined by Ryan Cumming\, Ph.D.\, Program Director for Hunger Education with ELCA World Hunger for a conversation about climate change\, poverty\, hunger — and the many ways God is at work in the United States and around the world.
