DESCRIPTION:Bringing Polarities into Balance: Virtual Autumn Leadership Event \nIt is difficult to move forward faithfully when life seems to be reduced to one choice between opposing sides. Living in between pre-COVID and post-COVID times (called liminal space)\, has polarized people more than ever and continues to deepen the divide in society itself.  One way forward is to learn to balance opposites in healthy ways for ourselves\, our churches\, and our society. This retreat will teach tools to manage polarities and open paths for the future that create a variety of choices. Leading to a faith-grounded sanity necessary for a thriving church and its surrounding communities. Living with and more often than or gives us new perspectives for the emerging future; we can move between opposites without compromising our values\, while at the same time widening our scope of possibilities. \nRostered Ministers in the North/West Lower Michigan Synod\, Southeast Michigan Synod\, and Northern Great Lakes Synod are invited to attend this two day virtual learning event featuring presentations from Lisa Withrow. This event will take place via Zoom on October 26-27\, 2020. \nLisa Withrow is an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church\, a former professor of church leadership\, and currently serves as a coach and consultant for churches\, non-profits\, and small businesses in the areas of leadership and team development\, strategic visioning\, and conflict management. \nThanks to a generous gift to the Bishop’s Teaching Fund from Jim and Christine Allen\, we are able to offer this learning event for a $5.00 registration fee. You are invited to join him for a three session Zoom event to explore some of these marvels and consider how they can inspire faith and awe. Find out easy ways to locate some of the brighter deep sky objects in the night sky. You will receive an immediate confirmation if you submit the form correctly. \nLearn More: \nWhat We Know \nWe share a love and calling for the church and young people \nWe desire deeper connections and networking with other leaders in synods and other leaders in our church and a hope for collaboration \nWe know that young adults who were active in their church in high school are dropping out of church. We know our congregations are asking\, where are the young people? \nWe know that past research from the Exemplary Youth Ministry Study and similar studies shows that some congregations are not shrinking\, they are retaining and involving their young people (ages 15-29) which brings overall vitality to the congregations. \nWe hope this Gathering will train leaders to work within the Synodical structures and our congregations to increase the number of youth and young adults involved in the life and leadership of the church \nWe pray that because of this leadership training we will create pathways for increased leadership roles for younger people in our church \nIn September 2019\, over 40 leaders who serve as SYMBOL leaders\, other synod leaders and churchwide staff were trained in NJ. Since then\, some of the SYMBOL leaders created a synodical plan\, trained other leaders\, worked with congregations\, and are seeing substantial change and growth. \nIn January\, 2020 Over 80 youth directors attended either a Growing Young Intensive Course or a workshop at the ELCA Network for children\, youth\, and family Extravaganza in Anaheim\, CA. \nIn the spring of 2020\, over 30 people participated in a 4 week online Growing Young book study. \nWho is Invited? \nWe are inviting synodical leadership to this training\, whether it be SYMBOL\, DEM’s and others who are willing to be trained to implement the strategies in the congregations and ministries they serve.  We are inviting the Domestic Mission Staff and other churchwide staff who are interested in receiving this training for their context or ministry. Feel free to invite others to join with especially those who will benefit from the training and will help you implement a synodical or ministry strategy. \nWe believe this synergy of leaders; congregationally\, synodically and churchwide\, will create a stimulating and innovative learning environment for training\, discussion\, and brainstorming. \nCost \nThanks to a grant from the ELCA Always Being Made New Campaign\, we can offer this leadership training at no cost for all who attend.  Mark the box on the registration form if you do not have the book and we will send one to you. DESCRIPTION:The World Hunger Bike Tour is back for 2020! \nAfter a one year hiatus\, the “World Hunger Bike Tour” returns this year for another ride to visit Synod churches to raise awareness for ELCA World Hunger and the great work they are doing! This year the ride will be touring the Capital Conference. Previous rides have raised over $12\,000 for ELCA World Hunger! \nAll are welcome! If you are bike rider and want to help us raise awareness\, as well as dollars\, for World Hunger\, this is your chance to ride one\, two\, three\, or all four the days of the ride! If you can’t ride\, but still want to participate\, there will be an option to donate! \nThe dates for this years ride are June 4-7\, 2020. More details are coming soon! \nGod’s work\, our legs!
