These are stories about families who have fled violence and persecution in their home countries and are now an integral part of the Lansing region – buying homes\, starting businesses\, sending their children to local schools\, and adding to the diverse quilt that makes us such a unique\, welcoming community. \nThe traveling exhibit consists of a book\, informational materials\, and easy-to-assemble displays (fourteen 20″ x 30″ storyboards with easels). The companion art book is integral to the exhibit\, with in-depth stories\, photographs and information about resettlement in the Lansing area. DESCRIPTION:Save the date for the second annual Pedal for a Purpose: Synod Hunger Bike Tour from May 30-June 3. This four day cycling tour in the Stony Lake Conference of our Synod is aimed at deepening awareness of World Hunger\, challenging giving to ELCA World Hunger\, and enhancing physical fitness. Pedal for a Purpose will begin and end at First Lutheran Church in Muskegon. Riders may ride for a day\, a short segment\, or the entire tour (about 200 miles). DESCRIPTION:Several conferences are holding hearings on the Draft Social Statement. Encourage members in your congregation to read the statement and send representatives to a hearing in your area. Attendees should bring their copy of the statement and be prepared to articulate comments and suggestions about the wording of the document. \nThe task force published the study “Faith\, Sexism\, Justice: Conversations Toward a Social Statement” in 2016 to invite deliberation and response throughout the ELCA. Responses to that study have been tabulated and reported to the task force. Drawing from this learning and the feedback to the study\, the task force has written the draft\, and it represents its best thinking to date about these issues. This draft has unanimous support from the task force for discussion by our church although all task force members may not agree with all aspects of the content. \nHearings are not designed for interactive discussion\, but they offer participants about an hour-and-a-half to share their comments on the text as it now stands. A task force representative is present at each hearing to listen to all comments; a synod recorder takes notes.
