DESCRIPTION:The Letters of Paul \n\nDr. Walter (“Wally”) Taylor\, Trinity Lutheran Seminary\, Columbus OH\n\n\n\n\n\nPaul became a Christian in the 30’s of the first century. Most of his writing was done in the decade of the 50’s\, before the gospels were written. He gives us\, therefore\, a glimpse of the first generation of Christians. Why not? The earliest congregations were composed of Jews who believed in Jesus as the Jewish Messiah. Many of them did not recognize that God wanted the Gentiles (non-Jews) to be included in their congregations. The church of Paul’s time\, therefore\, faced a crucial decision: Shall we bring this message about Jesus to the Gentiles\, at the risk of losing some of our identity? DESCRIPTION:The Gospel of John Pastor \nThomas Mammoser\, Peace Lutheran Church\, Gaylord MI \nThe Gospel of John was Martin Luther’s favorite gospel. In fact\, he thought it was “far to be preferred over the other three” because it will “show you Christ and teach you everything you need to know” (Luther’s Works\, Vol. 35\, Fortress Press\, 1960\, p. 362). At first\, we may be tempted to think Luther is exaggerating. There is much the gospel of John does not tell us. There are no stories about birth\, baptism\, temptation\, or transfiguration of Jesus. Jesus does not tell any parables. He does not cast any demons out of people\, and there is no story of Jesus instituting the meal we now call Holy Communion. It has traditionally been the church’s favorite gospel\, quoted more than any of the others in official documents and statements. Like the gospel of Mark\, it offers us a testimony of faith in Jesus Christ. It is a witness book. The Gospel according to Mark is the shortest of our four Gospels. It was likely the first of the four to be written (probably around A.D. 64-70). DESCRIPTION:The North/West Lower Michigan Synod Assembly will convene May 21-23\, 2017 at Immanuel Lutheran Church and Comfort Inn and Suites Hotel and Conference Center in Mt. Pleasant. \nOur Assembly theme is “Freed by God’s Grace\,” from the verse “So if the Son makes you free\, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36). We will welcome the Reverend Dr. R. Guy Erwin\, Bishop of the Southwest California Synod\, as our keynote speaker. Bishop Erwin\, a member of the Osage Nation\, is the first Native American bishop elected to office in the ELCA. He is a noted church historian who has frequently taught courses on Martin Luther and the Lutheran Reformation. Bishop Erwin will address both of these topics during his time with the assembly. Bradley Street\, in Mt. Pleasant. Check-in and packet pick-up will take place at the Comfort Inn and Suites Conference Center from 3:00-6:00pm. No check-in will be available at Immanuel\, so assembly voting members are urged to arrive in Mt.
