Dear Friends in Christ,
Peace be with you!
Earlier today, notices were posted on social media alerting congregations of a potential threat of violence possibly taking place this weekend or next week. I notified our rostered ministers of these concerns this afternoon. After conversations with regional colleagues and the Conference of Bishops, it appears this alarm stems not from a specific threat, but as a result of the highly anxious times we live in. However, due to both COVID-19 and safety concerns, our Governor’s Office is strongly suggesting churches do not gather for in-person worship through at least January 24.
As we continue in these times filled with anxiety and uncertainty, we must remain vigilant for the safety of our leaders, members, and the general public. I strongly agree with the Governor’s Office’s suggestion and continue to recommend the suspension of in-person worship beyond January 24.
As I write this email and turn to prayer, I am recalling the Gospel story of Jesus calming the storm and giving thanks that he is in the boat with us and so we do not need to be afraid. In looking towards the coming week, I invite you to pray for our nation, for our elected officials, and for those sworn to protect us. Please also know that you are held in my prayers.
Peace,
The Rev. Craig Alan Satterlee, Ph.D., Bishop
