Palm Sunday Path

Posted: March 5, 2026 image

The Palm Sunday Path is based on the principles of Matthew 25: healing the sick, feeding the hungry and welcoming the stranger. Just as Jesus entered Jerusalem humbly and peacefully on Palm Sunday, we will enter our capitol in Lansing proclaiming God’s values in contrast to the dominant politics of hate, greed and injustice.

UPDATE (03/31/2026):

Hundreds of Christians from various denominations gathered in Lansing, Michigan for a Palm Sunday procession, walking from Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ to the Michigan State Capitol. The event included a large choir and speakers from different Christian traditions, emphasizing unity despite denominational differences.

Despite the wide diversity of Christian traditions, participants were united by a simple message: love your neighbor. Speakers, including ELCA’s own Pr. Dan Beirne, highlighted the inclusive nature of Jesus’ ministry, reminding those gathered that all are welcome at God’s table regardless of background, identity, or circumstance.

Palm Sunday recalls Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, where cries of “Hosanna” expressed both praise and a plea for salvation. That dual meaning shaped the gathering, holding together gratitude for God’s love and concern for those who feel overlooked or left behind.

As Bishop Julie stated, “It can mean hooray, we give thanks. But it can also mean, Lord, save us. Giving thanks for all that God has done for us. But, also pleading for those who feel like they are being left behind.”

Thank you to Pastor Dan Beirne for providing a speech on behalf of us here in the North/West Lower Michigan Synod. AND thank you to all who participated and for shining your light for all to see.
