If there’s one thing Michiganders know, it’s that the weather can turn on a dime – and when it brings disaster, our synod is ready to respond. A response that is backed by the ever-important disaster relief fund.
The North/West Lower Michigan Synod Disaster Relief Fund was established in 2016 to provide disaster relief to communities within the synod. As funds are available, this fund may also be used to provide disaster grants to other synods or international agencies of the church in responding to regional or international disasters. Disbursements are authorized by the Executive Committee based on recommendation from the Bishop in consultation with Assistants to the Bishop.
This fund has been used to provide assistance to communities in crisis throughout Michigan:
- Flooding in Midland area
- Tornados surrounding Peace, Gaylord and Prince of Peace, Portage
- Tornados in other synods – South Dakota, Southern Ohio, Indiana-Kentucky
- Hurricanes in other synods – Florida-Bahamas Synod, Southwest Texas Synod
- Congregations in the northern lower peninsula after the ice storms last winter.
This fund has often been supported by our annual Synod Assembly offerings and by contributions from congregations and individuals in our synod. As of October 31, the fund balance is just shy of $7,300.
Please consider supporting this fund so we might continue this important ministry to communities in urgent need.
